Vapour permeability plays a crucial role in the food and snack industries, directly impacting product quality, freshness and shelf life. By precisely controlling the permeability of packaging to key vapours - such as water vapour, oxygen and ethylene - manufacturers can preserve texture, flavour, aroma and safety from production to the point of consumption. Versaperm’s advanced MS (Mass Spectrometer) vapour permeability system is a cutting-edge solution for measuring vapour permeability. It can assess the individual permeabilities for water vapour, oxygen and all other gases all with just a single, measurement, helping manufacturers ensure that packaging materials provide optimal protection for food and confectionery products.

The Versaperm system is versatile, working across all types of food, confectionery, packaging materials, coatings and films. A multi-chamber option allows simultaneous testing of multiple products and materials.   For products that depend on maintaining precise moisture levels, such as cakes, breads and cheeses, optimized vapour permeability prevents dehydration, preserving texture and flavour while extending shelf life. Equally important is preventing excess moisture, which can lead to oxidation, spoilage and mould growth

The equipment can be used on both material samples or on complete finished packages.  These can be critically important as manufacturing processes may change vapour permeability by a factor of four.  The sealing process can affect it by an even greater amount.

Fast, reliable and user-friendly, the Versaperm MS system delivers results with precision in the parts per million (PPM) to parts per billion (PPB) range. It can control key environmental factors such as temperature and pressure, ensuring accurate measurement under various or changing conditions. The system is capable of testing an array of packaging types, including metallized foil, sachets, starch-based coatings and molecular barrier films. Additionally, it can determine the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) of products that may degrade under traditional testing methods although ERH is more normally measured using a WVTR specific instrument.

In addition to manufacturing its state-of-the-art instruments, Versaperm provides a technical consultancy service and a specialized permeability testing service for companies that need occasional testing of packaging or materials, without investing in dedicated equipment.
